Spiritual Direction

“You heard me. You heard me all the way…You heard me to my own story.”

Nelle Morton

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is the art of accompaniment and deep listening. A spiritual director acts as mirror which reflects the most sacred and beloved parts of yourself back to you so you can see them anew through the eyes of Love. The word “direction” is a bit of a misnomer, as the spiritual director is never controlling or authoritarian (if they are, find a new one!), though they can suggest practices and resources which may be supportive to your spiritual life. Instead, the primary work of a spiritual director holds a sacred space for you to tell your story and be heard with deep care and compassion. Different from a therapist, a spiritual director pays special attention to your soul and how the Divine is unfolding in your life. Not attached to an organized religion or don’t use words like God or the Divine? That’s fine! Whatever connects you to something larger than yourself is worthy of exploration and care.

I received my spiritual direction training through Still Harbor, an organization dedicated to living at the intersection of spirituality and social justice. Though not an exhaustive list, my special focus is supporting queer folks, activists and community organizers, and others engaged in the work of collective liberation. If you are interested in discerning a spiritual direction relationship together, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
